A history moment

The celery capital, before the chickens

Andrew Aulin gave the settlement its name in 1879. For decades after, this was celery country, and the Nelson & Company packing house and the R. W. Estes precooler still stand near the water tower.

The Lawton House, built in 1890 and moved to West Broadway in 1910, is the Historical Society's home and where the farmers market sets up on first Saturdays. The city incorporated in 1925.

And the chickens: they are heritage now. The downtown flock was moved out of the shopping center in December 2023, and only a few strays still wander past the diner patio.
